TELSTRA will show up to four games of AFL live on mobile phones and hopes to also screen rugby league games on handsets after it finalised an online digital media and sponsorship package across three sports worth as much as $170 million.
The final piece in the telecommunications giant's aggressive pitch for fixed internet and mobile phone sports content will be unveiled within days when Telstra announces a sponsorship and media rights deal with the National Rugby League worth about $90 million.
The deal, which has taken months to negotiate, became bogged down in details over new technology, including the latest mobile broadcast methods, which are yet to be made commercially available in Australia.
