AFL umpires director Jeff Gieschen has said he believes the trial whereby goal and boundary umpires were able to award some free kicks not picked up by the field umpire during Sunday's NAB Cup match between Melbourne and Hawthorn, has shown the initiative will 'not have a massive impact'.

But he said the trial had merit in helping to determine whether the umpires' performances could be made more accurate by having goal and boundary umpires assist in the awarding of free kicks.
